This week, in celebration of Australia Day and the upcoming Chinese New Year, we extended our imaginative play in the home corner by introducing Australian and Chinese cultural foods. The children were curious and asked lots of questions about the different foods and their names. This inspired an Australian Food Bingo game, which featured the foods we discussed, along with some additional Aussie favourites.
For lunch, we enjoyed iconic Australian dishes—meat pies and sausage rolls—and for afternoon tea, the children had fairy bread and Vegemite sandwiches. It was a truly Aussie experience!
This activity not only encouraged the children’s listening and comprehension skills but also sparked meaningful discussions about food and culture. It was a fun, hands-on way to celebrate Australian traditions and foster curiosity about the world around them.
Today during our yarning circle, we read a delightful book "The Big Red Rock" by Jess Stockham. As we gathered on our mat, the children chose this book with excitement as they spotted the book's cover.
The story sparked wonderful conversations among our young learners. Levi face beamed as he suggested we can take airplane to fly across the big red rock.
Red Room friends demonstrated remarkable listening and speaking skills, waiting patiently for their turn as we put our hand up during circle for speaking out. The story seemed to ignite their curiosity about the natural world around them. Especially when I mentioned there is a big red rock called “Uluṟu “ in Northern Territory. The children's interest in rocks and natural materials was evident throughout the story time.
